It goes without saying that elopement and wedding photographers have one of the best jobs in the world; capturing the love that couple’s share for one another. Whether that is for the world to see or for the privacy of their own home, those couple’s get to choose that option. However, that job may prove to be overwhelming, especially for someone who is just starting out.
Get to know your clients
The first real step is getting to know your clients. Understand who they are as both individuals and a couple, as well as what makes them a good couple. When you get to know them, you have a clear idea of how to plan around them. Figure out their style, their identity as a couple, and the locale of which they are planning their wedding for. Not to mention, it builds a rapport between the two parties. Trust is not something to come by easily, however, this is the best first step you can take towards that end. That connection has the ability to allow for both parties to be comfortable and an openness towards suggestions with shots and other ideas.
Setting expectations
With an elopement shoot, both parties should set expectations of what they are looking to accomplish and receive out of the session. The two parties will likely come together to determine a date. It will assist primarily in understanding the budget. How much will the couple be willing to allocate towards a photographer and coming to a compromise as to an appropriate price. It will also help you gather whether they want additional services, extras, whether they expect a full day’s coverage or simply half the time. You should be upfront with your own expectations, whatever they may be.
Laying out the details
The most important part is knowing the details. Primarily: when and where. Knowing the date and location of the session provides a means of planning. It seems redundant to continue to highlight that point, however, laying out the details allows you to provide the best experience you can for the couple, which is the entire point of the event. Arriving in a timely manner, coming prepared with all the necessary equipment ready, and ready to start shooting.
Working towards the end goal of the day, I believe that these will prove to be the best tips going forward for a beginner. The elopement should go off without a hitch (or with a hitch).
