As I am sure you could guess, I am a major proponent of marriage on this site. In my experience, there are few things in life more precious than committing yourself to another person for the rest of your life. I’ve been fortunate to witness several vow renewal ceremonies of couples who have celebrated decades of marriage together and I’d like to highlight how special that truly is.
First off, I should explain why a vow renewal holds the monumental weight that it does in our generation. The renewal of vows ceremony began in the United States in the 1950s, popularized by the 1970s. It has been predominantly utilized by Christian denominations as a way to reaffirm and strengthen a marriage. Typically, this milestone is celebrated 10 years into a marriage, however, I have seen it as soon as two years (Williams & Thompson, 2022). The reality is that there doesn’t need to be a milestone anniversary to renew your vows, however, after so many years, it can serve to reinforce (Winner, 2024).
A renewal of vows ceremony also serves as a way to celebrate the years of marriage with your children or even grandchildren (Johnson, 2024). More than likely, your children were not present at your marriage ceremony, so when you host a renewal of vows ceremony, you have the chance to bring your entire family into that celebration, planting a memory of joy with your children and hopefully, an aspiration to reach that milestone for their own relationships. Additionally, you can set a renewal of vows to commemorate the birth of a child, strengthening your love in a vital moment (Shafiee, 2024).
The question of how elaborate does the vow renewal ceremony have to be seems to arise fairly often. The truth of the matter is that it can be as private as you and your spouse or as elaborate as all of your friends and family. Realistically, the answer depends entirely on your budget for an event of this magnitude. Within that realm of conversation, is the inclusion of rings. Are they a requirement for this ceremony? No. Do you need a new set? No. However, one way you can commemorate the event is to take the rings you currently own and add new engravings to your rings (Williams & Thompson, 2022).
The milestone of renewing your vows cannot be understated. Honoring the love that you and your spouse share after any amount of time is deserving of celebration. I’ve witnessed so many beautiful couples elope or get married and I can say, when that love lasts for decades, till the end of your life, there are no words that one can express outside of that marriage to convey how breathtaking that event can be.
