Branding is a fundamental part of your career, developing the framework of your business. But what many people don’t often think about is how much it affects your career. With branding, the easiest lessons to learn often come from people who have tried, failed, and corrected in their work. That last part is crucial, as trying and failing is not an option otherwise. With that in mind, let’s look at a few ways how branding affects your career.
Purpose
The most important place to start is by understanding the purpose of your brand. The purpose is ultimately impacted by your values, beliefs, mission, and vision for the brand. Whether your goal is to build up others in your community, develop new inventions, or create inspiring content, it is all reflected in your brand’s purpose. For example, a record label’s purpose is to elevate the platform of the artists it represents. A restaurant’s objective and purpose is to serve its customers and ensure they have an overall pleasant experience. A physician or a physical therapist office’s purpose is to ascertain the wellbeing of their clients and what they can do to make their lives better. When you begin developing your brand or even if you have already established your brand, think about what you hope to accomplish with it. In doing so, you will gain an understanding of how you do business, who you do business with, and how you conduct yourself throughout to maintain your personal and brand integrity.
Authenticity
A vital part of any brand nowadays is authenticity. When you establish who you are, provide examples of what you do, and deliver on your promises, congratulations, you’ve done the bare minimum. It’s not something to take lightly, as many brands cannot even manage that simple fact of business. When your brand carries itself authentically, it reflects on who you are as a person and what you are working towards in your career. People take note of these things and will provide you a foundation for excellence. By maintaining that level of authenticity, it will affect how your audience perceives you and should provide a positive result for your career.
Innovative and Unique
Experimentation leads to innovation. One of the best ways that your brand may impact your career positively is to stand out among the crowd. Being innovative and unique has proven to be incredibly vital to moving forward. For example, one of the most innovative and unique companies is the fascinating Liquid Death. If you are unfamiliar with the company, Liquid Death is a company that sells water but in aluminum cans. However, canned water is not the reason they are as unique as they are. The company’s marketing, slogan, and advertising are all totally unique, appealing to a counter-culture audience with a sense of backhanded fun. Liquid Death’s product is not that special, but its delivery is absolutely unique. When considering your own brand, think about what you are offering and how you can be innovative in presenting that to the world.
Expertise
Experience outranks everything. Branding requires you to be a versatile individual by continually progressing your knowledge and skills. In doing so, you slowly accumulate the experience you need to speak with authority on a topic. For example, I have managed to become an experienced photographer since I picked up the camera in 2015. Over the years, I developed the skill slowly by acquiring new clients and opportunities to the point where I created a sustainable business based around my expertise. So do your research, start writing, and push it around in your circles. Eventually, that experience will become yet another building block in your career.
Perspective
Ultimately, the best way branding affects your career is that it affects your perspective. Branding is all about making progress on your goals. Whether they are short-term goals or long-term objectives, your brand will only make as much progress as you are willing to invest in it. While things will not always go according to plan, it’s important to remember to keep your head up and keep pushing forward. However, your perspective is not the only one that matters in this equation. You also have to consider the perspective of the customer. Your audience is the reason you have been able to be successful. When you are thinking about the audience in all of your decisions, it actually makes you a more considerate individual, which will affect your career in how you treat the people around you.
Developing your own brand is a journey, not a destination. It is not easy, it is a grind, but at the end of the day, it is so worth it. While this is not the most in-depth article about how it affects your career, I believe this will suffice for the time being. I hope you learned something and that you have an excellent week!
