The idea of mastering an art form is a very difficult thing to do. Some would argue that you never truly master any form of art, as there is always something new to discover. I’m going to argue on that point today, however, but rather give you a few avenues to pursue that idea of mastering the art, specifically of wedding photography.
The first step you should be taking is understanding the principles of wedding photography; what it symbolizes and how you should treat that symbolic idea. The essence of the wedding day is the priority of your job. The emotions should be vibrant and highlighted in the work that you have captured. Knowing the right moment to take the shot is a skill that develops over time. Capturing candid moments, stolen glances, and the beauty of a couple’s love are the best places to start.
Your job really begins before the wedding, gathering an idea of what you hope to accomplish and what potential obstacles may come to pass. Especially, when it comes to the venue and the weather, to factors that are out of your control. The venue is an easier obstacle to navigate, specifically when it comes to the lighting conditions and layout. Meanwhile, all you can do with the weather is plan to protect your equipment and hope you can establish some great shots in the process. Knowing the role that you play on the wedding day is essential for mastery. If you don’t have that understanding, you won’t reach those heights. The best point of advice I can offer is to do your best to make everyone involved in the wedding feel as comfortable as possible. For the bride and groom, you need to understand what they want from the photos, as really, it is a once in a lifetime event. By balancing direction and spontaneity, you have the ability to preserve moments of their special day and even a few timeless photographs.
The conversation of mastering the art would be irrelevant without mentioning that you need to have an excellent understanding of how your equipment functions and what you can accomplish with it. To fully master any craft, you have to become an expert in your equipment. Understanding what each function and component accomplish is the first priority of mastering photography. There is always another technique to achieve, but your equipment is the most important piece of mastery. Finally, post-processing and editing of your work is another component of mastery. The role that editing plays is critical. Refining your work is just as important as capturing a great image to begin with. Once you manage to define your own style of editing, you have a better chance of smoothing out the editing process and even refining your skills to only a few minutes at a time.
Admittedly, there were a number of additional topics that I thought to cover, but I believe these are the first steps to mastering wedding photography. I did discover a site with a more in-depth approach of mastering wedding photography, from broad strokes to the minute details, including marketing your work, destination weddings, and legal considerations. I will link it below. I hope that you have learned something today and that you have an excellent week!
Warmest regards,
Logan Clark
